Mail Free Saturdays?

The idea has been kicking around for a while, but it looks as if the U.S. Postal Service is going to drop Saturday delivery.Postmaster General John E. Potter said today the USPS likely will loseanother $7 billion in 2010, its fourth consecutive year in the red.

The reasons will surprise nobody -- the volume of snail mail is declining mainly because of the Internet.Potter is asking Congress for more power to raise postage rates, control payroll and adjust its delivery schedule. So, to the chagrin of dogs across the country, it looks as if the much-discussed five-day delivery is another step closer to reality, among other cost-cutting measures. Federal law, however, requires mail delivery six days a week, so the USPS request will need congressional approval.

(Great, another reason for more people to be mad about the fact they aren't receiving their checks on time. Another day off the list where you can receive it is only going to cause more frustration. And this whole situation has arised because of the fact they want to cut costs, so cutting costs for slow money delivery.)
